1. Pasting posters around the school at interesting locations.
How will it be done? Posters will be pasted at funny places eg. on the floor to attract attention.
Why will this solve the problem? The message will strike them as something funny and therefore would imprint itself in their minds and they will remember the message and help raise awareness.
2. Creating and publishing an e-book about the canal.
How will it be done? Koobits Author would be used to create the e-book and it would be published on the blog.
Why will this solve the problem? People would read it as it looks interesting and it would therefore raise awareness.
3. Placing signs displaying wacky signs around the canal.
How will it be done? Wooden signs displaying " 10m to the dustbin! Don't litter yet!" would be made and hammered into the ground around the canal.
Why will it solve the problem? It would be seen as: "ok. ther's only 10m left, might as well hold it until i reach that irritating dustbin"~~
4. Making a video about the canal and posting it on YouTube.
How will it be done? We would film our group acting out a short skit.
Why will this solve the problem? Hopefully people will watch it and learn that littering in the canal is wrong and against the law.
Construction going on near the canal. Wonder what they're building?
Have you ever noticed how green the place is?
Water from small drains go lead to the Alexandra Canal!
x) The small path by a drain that I take to walk home.
The view from my room out to the canal.
A picture I took on the way home from school
The jogging path by our Alexandra Canal!
The rainbow trash bins. Was this a project done by another school? Or another group in our school? It makes the jogging path a lot more colourful!!

"What I know?"
- People throw litter into the canal
- This makes the canal is dirty and smelly
- There are few dustbins alongside the canal(most are on only one side of the canal)
- There are living things in the canal.
- Litter in the canal makes it look ugly
What we need to know
- Why are the waters in canals in Singapore so murky(is it because of the little? Pollution? or something else?)
- How does the litter affect the canal?
- Why does litter affect the canal?
- Why do people litter in the canal?
- Where does the water go after the canal?
- How is it clean?
Learning Issues
- Why does this happen?
- How dies it affect people?
- Who does it effect?
-What should we do to solve it?
We are currently doing PBl, problem based learning.
So, what is the problem that we have indicate?
It is that most canals are very dirty because people throw rubbish into it.
It was then questions kept popping into our mind like
" what will you do about the problem? "
1. Add more dustbins along the other sides of the canal
2. Make signs and put them along the sides of the canal. (e.g. 10m to dustbins!)
3. Tell people what happens when they pollute the water.
" Why do you want to reduce this problem? "
1. It has an unpleasant smell.
2. It is unsightly to see litter in the canal.
3. the ecosystem might be affected.
4. It attracts pests and breeds germs.
5. The people living near the canal are affected by the smell.
There we have decided on our problem statement:
The canals are dirty because lazy and irresponsible people throw their rubbish into it. It is very unpleasant and smelly to see and smell the rubbish rotting in the canal. It discourages tourists from coming here. The ecosystem in the canal might be affected. Even people living near the canal would be affected. We think that more dustbins should be added to sides of the canal as it has no dustbins along in some canals.
I'll write more on this, the next post ^^
